Your comprehensive guide to obtaining and maintaining your F-2-7S visa in South Korea.
Learn MoreThe South Korean Ministry of Justice has launched a progressive initiative aimed at enhancing the nation's talent pool by facilitating pathways to permanent residency or citizenship. This initiative is particularly beneficial for international students graduating from prestigious institutions in Korea.
Under this scheme, the F-2-7S visa is offered to eligible students and recent alumni from universities such as UST, KAIST, UNIST, DGIST, and GIST. This visa allows for a maximum sojourn period of five years, offering a substantial timeframe for graduates to develop their careers and establish a life in South Korea.
Did you know? The F-2-7S visa first made its appearance in December 2021, marking a significant milestone in South Korea's approach to international education and residency.
Long-Term Residency: The F-2-7S visa allows for a longer stay compared to other visa types, with the potential for extensions based on continued eligibility. A welcoming embrace for a future full of possibilities!
Path to Permanent Residency and Citizenship: Just 3 years after obtaining this visa, you can apply for permanent residency 😊 and, once you’ve secured that, stepping up to citizenship is just a matter of meeting the points-based system requirements. Yes, it’s that straightforward, eeh ya! 😃
Family Inclusion: Your loved ones can join in on the adventure! Spouses and dependent children of the primary visa holder can also receive visas under certain conditions. Everyone’s invited!
Employment Flexibility: Enjoy the freedom to switch jobs or kickstart your own business any time you like! No extra paperwork, no sponsorship hurdles. It’s your career, on your terms! 🌟
Applicants interested in the F-2-7S visa must meet all of the following requirements. Note that the application can be submitted up to twice:
Note: BSc graduates are not eligible to apply for this visa.
Additional Note: This visa is inapplicable to individuals residing outside of Korea after obtaining a master’s or doctoral degree from KAIST.
Submit the following documents to the University's Student Service Office, e.g., KAIST ISSS:
Prepare for the interview, demonstrate your enthusiasm for staying and working in Korea, and show how you plan to integrate into Korean society. Be honest and express your long-term goals clearly.
In the interview or when you write your plans, you should express that you want to work in Korea, not apply for a PhD. If you say you want to pursue a PhD, they might tell you that you don't need an F-2-7 visa for that, and you will be denied. Another reason for denial would be indicating that you only want to work in a foreign company situated in Korea. There was a case where an applicant who wanted to work exclusively in a foreign company in Korea got declined. Make sure to show that you want to work in a Korean company.
Interviews are granted only to those who submit all required documents, including three recommendation letters and an apostilled official criminal record certificate.
ISSS will contact candidates for interviews individually. Successful candidates will receive the president's letter of recommendation within 2-3 business days after the interview results are announced.
* Those who do not pass the interview may be given a second chance if they submit a letter of justification within 10 days from the notification date. Second chance interviews are conducted twice a year (January-February, July-August).
* Those who fail to pass the first interview or the second chance interview and do not receive a president’s recommendation letter should apply for the existing F2-7 (point system) residence visa.
Submit your completed application including all required documents and the president’s recommendation letter to the Global Talent Visa Center.

The F-2-7 visa is a general long-term residency visa based on a points system, while the F-2-7S visa is specifically designed for highly talented individuals, often with more stringent requirements and higher expectations for professional achievements and income levels.
Yes, spouses and dependent children can join the primary visa holder under the F-2-7S visa, provided the primary holder meets the necessary income requirements to support their stay.
Please scroll up to the "Application Process" section for detailed document requirements.
You can apply for the extension starting from 4 months to 1 month before the expiration date. For example, if it is expiring on February 22, 2025, you can start applying from October 2024.
The total period of the visa is 5 years, and they will give you a maximum of 2 years each time. Remember, it depends on the expiration date of your passport. If it will expire within one year of your visa application, you will only get one year. So, try to update your passport. But still, you can apply for the extension, but you have to pay the application fee, which you would have avoided if you had gotten two years from the start.
Receiving the F-2-7S visa in February 2023 has been a pivotal moment in my career and life in Korea. This visa has enabled me to work as a Development Engineer at Jinsol Turbo Machinery, where I've made significant contributions in designing advanced cooling systems and compact heat exchangers. Additionally, it has provided me with the opportunity to expand my professional network, engage in collaborative projects, and gain invaluable experience in a global environment. This has not only enhanced my technical skills but also enriched my cultural understanding, making my time in Korea profoundly rewarding both professionally and personally.
The visa helped me to pursue my interest in the field of medical robotics as I was independent from all the companies. This is a big advantage in my opinion because you dont feel burdened or pressured by your company.
Another aspect of this visa is the perspective of obtaining permanent residence and naturalization. I would say this is definetly something people should consider if they want to upgrade their passport. All in all i see this as a great opportunity to encourage foreigners stay a little longer in korea before deciding to completely return to their countries for good.
